On January 21, 2019, thirty teachers from Kitaskinaw School had the pleasure of attending an engaging day of professional learning through Indigenous Voices at the River Cree Resort Hotel. The day was organized by the Edmonton Regional Learning Consortium (ERLC) featuring topics on traditional oral storytelling, exploring the use of Indigenous literature in elementary and secondary, stories of resilience and information that supports the understanding of First Nations, Metis and Inuit (FNMI) people.
The day featured keynote speaker David Bouchard who is a best-selling author and today writes amazing books that reflect his roots and Aboriginal culture. We have over 40 of David Bouchard’s books in our school library such as, The Elders Are Watching, Seven Sacred Teachings, I Am Raven and The Drum Calls Softly.
Our school was also showcased for how we created a welcoming, inclusive environment which led to the positive impacts within our community through literacy. Kitaskinaw School also received ten books written by David Bouchard from ERLC.
As a result of the learning we received at this valuable session, teachers engaged in lifelong learning and continued to explore ways to foster effective relationships with students and the community of Maskekosihk (Enoch).
